The Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP carries out research and development activities in the field of nondestructive testing processes along the entire materials value chain. For customers in the automobile, aerospace, rail, energy, construction and agriculture industries, the institute offers a wide range of NDT expertise and technologies. From June 13 to 17, 2016, Fraunhofer IZFP will discuss and present the issue regarding surface, near-surface and volume inspection of cast components using complementary NDT approaches at the World Conference on Non-Destructive Testing (WCNDT) in Munich.
Due to the complexity of the metal casting process, the production of cast components requires appropriate quality assurance procedures. Careful material melting, casting and heat treatment within high-level production processes might nevertheless give rise to irregularities: gas porosity, shrinkage defects, mold material defects, pouring metal defects and metallurgical defects, such as hot cracking. Dye penetrant inspection can reveal surface defects, respective indications might point to defective bulk material.
In this contribution we concentrate on the detection and quantitative characterization of casting defects at the surface as well as in the near-surface and the bulk area. For ultrasonic inspection of the bulk material we employ mechanized scanning and defect reconstruction using the Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT).
For the near-surface inspection we use eddy current techniques to identify open or (partially) covered defects. Visual surface inspection using optical systems and image processing techniques for production- or corrosion-induced deficiencies, open cracks or other damages complements our multi-sensor approach. We focus on cast bronze-components, but also address other cast materials, relevant e.g. in automotive industries.

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.
You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
