Nondestructive Testing of Material Properties and Defects in Hot Stamped Parts

Sabine Poitevin-Burbes Presse und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Fraunhofer-Institut für Zerstörungsfreie Prüfverfahren IZFP

The Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP carries out research and development activities in the field of nondestructive testing processes along the entire materials value chain. For customers in the automobile, aerospace, rail, energy, construction and agriculture industries, the institute offers a wide range of NDT expertise and technologies. From June 13 to 17, 2016, Fraunhofer IZFP will discuss and present the issue regarding the nondestructive testing of material properties and defects in hot stamped parts at the 19th World Conference on Non-Destructive Testing (WCNDT) in Munich.

Our researchers and engineers provide an overview about the possibilities of nondestructive testing (NDT) methods for inspection of part quality focused on the crack and neckings of cold and hot stamped parts. Inline testing systems based on electromagnetic or ultrasonic NDT techniques could be used to inspect the raw material (decoiled strip or sheets), semi-finished and final products for defects like cracks or inclusions. If such defect detection methods are combined with so-called micromagnetic methods, it is possible to simultaneously determine isotropic and anisotropic material properties, like tensile and yield strength, vertical and planar anisotropy as well as residual stress. During stamping the monitoring of structure-borne sound with tool integrated sensors is a possibility to recognize the crack formation in the part.

Stamped parts can be inspected for typical drawing defects, like cracks, neckings or foldings with ultrasonic NDT techniques and thermography as well. Small cracks and neckings at the edges of the stamped part can be detected with special eddy-current thermography techniques. And again, micromagnetic methods are used in order to determine the material properties of the formed steel and the coating. Manual or automated testing systems have become common tools for nondestructive testing of mechanical properties and material irregularities in PHS.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
