Professor Dr. Eberhard Bodenschatz, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization, has been elected as a Fellow of the "European Physical Society" (EPS). With this award, the EPS honors Eberhard Bodenschatz’s contributions to the dynamics of pattern formation, thermal convection, and particularly to Lagrangian turbulence; his work as Editor in Chief of the New Journal of Physics (NJP), and his role promoting opportunities for European researchers.
Selection criteria for EPS Fellows are based on outstanding contributions to physics, such as outstanding research in the field of physics, important applications in physics, thought leadership in physics, and, services for physics or significant contributions to education in physics.
Eberhard Bodenschatz received his PhD in 1989 in theoretical physics at the University of Bayreuth. From 1989 to 1992, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow in experimental physics at UC Santa Barbara, until the time he was appointed Professor of experimental physics at Cornell University in the state of New York (1992 to 2005). Since 2005, Eberhard Bodenschatz has been a Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen, and a Professor at the University of Göttingen since 2007. Additonally, Professor Bodenschatz is an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow, Cottrell Scholar, Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), and a Fellow of the European Mechanics Society (EUROMECH). Moreover, Prof. Bodenschatz is currently Chairman of the Chemistry, Physics and Technology Section of the Max Planck Society, and is the coordinator of the European high-performance infrastructure for Turbulence Research (EuHIT). He worked as Editor in Chief for the New Journal of Physics for 11 years.
Since his arrival at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen in 2005, Eberhard Bodenschatz has built the Göttingen Turbulence Facility, in which gases at high pressure are used to investigate the fundamental properties of strong turbulence. In addition, Eberhard Bodenschatz performs experiments in cloud physics at the innovative environmental research station Schneefernerhaus on the Zugspitze. In November 2014, he was awarded the world's prestigious Stanley Corrsin Award by the American Physical Society for his excellence in flow research. Since April 16, 2016, Prof. Bodenschatz, Max Planck Director, is a Full Member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
