2016 ESMT Annual Forum on digitalization stresses importance of cybersecurity

    - Experts identify “big shift from experience-based to data-driven managerial decision making”
    - Legal framework and good management of data is required to support innovation

“Digitalization. Responsible strategies for business and society” was the headline of the ESMT Annual Forum, which took place with almost 400 decision-makers on June 9, 2016 in Berlin. The conference provided an insight into diverse aspects of responsible leadership in relation to digitalization and its consequences for personal and corporate cybersecurity. Furthermore, panelists, speakers, and attendees considered the impact of cybersecurity on innovation. Keynotes by top managers, including Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management at Daimler AG, highlighted the importance of disruptive thinking and change in the age of digital transformation. “Responsible leadership is not to refuse change. That would be highly irresponsible,” Zetsche pointed out. As Vice President of Worldwide Education, Microsoft, Anthony Salcito provided a practical approach on digital transformation, which promotes “a culture shift in organizations” by “putting sharing and collaboration as the foundation for change.” Cyber expert Melissa Hathaway, who assessed the White House in regard to its cybersecurity in 2009, called for more emphasis on cybersecurity: “We need to start thinking forward. Industry 4.0 - fit bits, embedded medical devices, the Internet of Things - these products are not designed with security embedded and are connected to whole host of other devices and systems. Right now, we’re blindly adopting the technology without thinking about security, safety, privacy and resilience.”

Panel discussions and interactive seminars gave Annual Forum participants the opportunity to engage in the debate and evaluate the impact of digitalization on security, and vice versa, for their own organizations and for society as a whole. During these sessions, Stefan Heissner, Managing Partner Fraud Investigation and Dispute Services at EY, approached the topic from a security-oriented angle, emphasizing the importance of considering risks rather than continuing to invest in opportunity. Jamie Shea, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges NATO, stressed how critical it is to act now on privacy matters. Comparing them to the global issue of climate change, he commented: “We either get a grip on it within the next ten years or we’ve lost.”

The conference concluded with the ceremony honoring ShareTheMeal founder Sebastian Stricker, this year’s winner of the ESMT Responsible Leadership Award. Stricker, who has developed a crowdsourcing donation app, which enables users to donate a meal at the tap of a finger, talked about his views on global hunger.
