HHL Summer Program: Diving Into the World's Largest Domestic Market

MBA Volker Stößel Media Relations
HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management

Summer program of HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management on business operations in Europe

Students from four continents will attend the Summer Program at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management from June 13 to 25, 2016. The HHL Summer Program has been held every year since 1997, imparting practical knowledge and relevant skills to enable students to build up business relationships in the European Union, especially in Central and Eastern Europe. The participants come from HHL's partner universities in Australia, China, the United Kingdom and the U.S.

Ms. Chen Cheng, a Chinese student, currently enrolled at the Imperial Business School London, has joined the program: "This program has very specific focuses such as automotive industry company visits, Management in CEE, the German Economic System, Digitalization and Entrepreneurship. I am interested in all these fields and would like to gain knowledge of business in Europe, especially in Germany. Having the mindset to experience various cultures and learn about different markets and businesses are essential for business school students. Thus, it is a great opportunity for us to travel abroad, meet new people and discover new ideas. Though Europe is facing challenges, it is still one of the most important markets in global business and still offers many business chances. Challenges are opportunities. So, it is very meaningful to have this international program."

Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Althammer, who holds the Chair of Macroeconomics at HHL, adds, "The program offers our partner universities and their students a unique opportunity to get to know Europe over the course of two weeks and to combine learning with live experience. We offer an introduction into the German economy and the particularities of German competitiveness. We also show our students the differences in family business strategies in Germany and the Czech Republic. Visiting Prague, the students can directly compare two neighboring European countries." Prof. Althammer continues, "Although the participants of our Summer Program are enrolled at reputable business schools, they all also work for companies in their home countries. To these companies, the European Union, as the world's largest domestic market, is highly attractive."
Frank Hoffmann, Director of International at HHL and responsible for the Summer Program, says, "The European Union, having a single market, with free movement of people, goods, services and capital; has allowed for comprehensive integration of the member states." The majority of the members have furthered the economic integration with the adoption of the Euro and many are thriving in the global market. However, while more countries seek to enter the European Union, some existing members struggle to survive economically as a result of the recent economic crises and shifts in the movement of qualified labor. Thus, how do companies take advantage of doing business in the European Union while managing regional challenges? And how do government policies affect how business is done? The goal of this course is to address these issues by comparing various economic, political and business climates. Upon completion of the program, participants will have a strong foundation to further analyze the business sectors and competitiveness."
