German-Chinese research project receives Best Paper Award

At the international conference “The Human Side of Service Engineering,” which took place as part of the “International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics” (AHFE), a paper produced by the research collaboration between the Stuttgart-based Fraunhofer IAO and the Chinese research center BRCUSE on the subject of Smart Senior Care Services received the Best Paper Award.

In the years to come, both China and Germany will be facing the huge consequences of an aging society. To develop effective approaches to resolving this shared challenge, it is important to share experience and pool existing expertise. For this reason, Fraunhofer IAO and the Beijing Research Center for Urban System Engineering (BRCUSE) have been working together on the development and design of Smart Senior Care Services since the start of 2012. At the international conference “The Human Side of Service Engineering,” the partners have now presented a paper with initial results from the project, for which they received the Best Paper Award. In the future, the two research institutes want to expand their collaboration to embrace the topics of big data, smart city systems, and the Internet of Things.

Integration of various quality concepts for measuring smart service quality

In the publication titled “An integrated approach for measuring and managing quality of smart senior care services,” the authors Jens Neuhüttler and Walter Ganz from Fraunhofer IAO and Jianbing Liu from BRCUSE present initial results from their research project. The project consists of a new approach to integrating quality concepts for digital services and technologies. Building on this, the team developed an instrument for measuring the quality of smart services for senior care. “The instrument helps the providers of smart services ensure that they achieve high quality – and does so every step of the way, from the technology and the service offer to the physical performance of the service. This is extremely important for personal services in particular, but also in other business sectors,” explains Neuhüttler. In the conference’s initial selection round, the paper was shortlisted for the Best Paper Award alongside four other international competitors. Based on the presentation at the conference, an international jury of experts then selected the paper as the best.

Smart services as a solution to social challenges

Stuttgart-based Fraunhofer IAO and the Beijing Research Center for Urban System Engineering (BRCUSE), an institute of the Beijing Academy of Science and Technology (BJAST), have been collaborating since 2012 to address social changes and challenges and the role that smart services can play in this area. At the start of this year, the institutes decided to expand their collaboration to include the topics of big data, smart city systems, and the Internet of Things. To this end, the Deputy Director of Fraunhofer IAO, Prof. Anette Weisbecker, and Prof. Hui Ding, President of the Beijing Academy of Science and Technology, signed a memorandum of understanding. In 2017, the partners intend to initiate joint projects on these new topics.
