In the winter semester of 2014/2015, 196,200 doctoral students were supervised by professors at German institutions of higher education. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that just under half of all doctoral students aimed to complete their doctorate in the subject group of mathematics, natural sciences (59,700 or 30%) or in engineering (36,700 or 19%).
44% of the doctoral students in the winter semester of 2014/2015 were women (87,000) and 56% were men (109,200). Foreign doctoral students accounted for 15% (28,700).
