Berlin, 21/09/2016. At the 66th IAA Commercial Vehicles, the Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), together with the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), will provide information about developments in the dangerous goods legislation. In addition, BAM will present the new version of the Dangerous Goods Database that will facilitate the planning and monitoring of dangerous goods transports. The presentations will take place as part of the "Hazardous Goods Day" at the IAA on September 27.
"An increasing use of new technologies such as lithium ion batteries or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks creates new challenges for their safe storage and transportation," said Dr. Thomas Goedecke, head of BAM’s dangerous goods packaging division. "We are pleased to present this important topic at the IAA because, with its investigations and assessments in the field of dangerous goods, BAM makes a major contribution to ensure safety standards keep pace with technological developments."
Around 290 million tonnes of dangerous goods are transported annually through Germany, nearly half of them (47%) by road. Dangerous goods being transported were involved in more than 43,000 accidents in 2014. BAM works at both national and international levels on updating the regulations for the packaging and transport of dangerous goods, and monitors their approval to increase the safety of transporting dangerous goods. In addition, BAM advises BMVI in all issues regarding the transport of dangerous goods.
The method by which dangerous goods may be transported by road is essentially determined by ADR, the "European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road". The new version will take effect 1 January 2017 and will also now regulate the transport of damaged light bulbs and lithium ion batteries. In his presentation at the IAA symposium, Dr. Goedecke will discuss which dangerous goods issues will gain in importance in the future.
At the IAA, BAM will also give a preview the new version of the Dangerous Goods Database which will be available in December 2016. The database is a joint project with BMVI and provides assistance to enterprises and government bodies to improve the planning, implementation and control of transport of dangerous goods.
