The Science fiction hotel of the year 2052

The “FutureHotel Building 2052” study presents visions for the future of hotel design.

Robots, drones, reactive environments: in its current “FutureHotel Building 2052” study, Fraunhofer IAO looks at trends and technologies that are changing the hotel industry and the design of hotel buildings. What may sound unbelievable today could well be reality in 35 years.

Back in 2008, Fraunhofer IAO and its partners in the “FutureHotel” project began researching what hotels will look like in the future. Their bold vision for a hotel room in the year 2020, which they presented in the “Showcase FutureHotel”, has already been implemented by pioneers in the sector. The time has now come for researchers to look further into the future. The “FutureHotel Building 2052” study shows what hoteliers and their guests in urban areas can expect in the coming decades. The hotel of the future is presented as one of the building blocks of a highly connected environment. The study reassesses existing concepts, considers relevant trends and researches the latest technology. Working with partners from the joint “FutureHotel” project, the research team identifies innovative solutions and developments with applications for hotel design.

Concrete recommendations for hotels in the year 2052

In the first part of the study the authors present scenarios, forecasts and concepts that paint various possible pictures of the next 40 years. Drawing on technological, social and environmental trends and developments, the project team has identified areas of innovation for future hotel design – from augmented reality and 3D printing to the use of robots. The resulting hotel applications look like something out of a science fiction film: multilingual service robots overcome language barriers, façades reposition themselves to optimize energy consumption and sensors react to the individual needs of hotel guests.

    A guide for hotel visionaries

Technology and digitalization are changing our environment and behavior, leading to radical changes in daily life and the workplace. Entire industries and sectors of activity are being transformed – including the hotel business. Virtual reality, smart glasses and drones are finding more and more uses. “The changes set to take place in our everyday lives are fascinating, but for many people they are also disturbing,” project manager Vanessa Borkmann notes. “This study will help us chart a course towards a desired future, in which we master technological innovations and not vice versa.” Hotels have always held a mirror up to society. “FutureHotel Building 2052” chronicles the latest changes we see in the new demand for travel experiences, in hotel environments as well as in architecture.

The “FutureHotel Building 2052” study is now available in the IAO shop (price: 98 euros).
