Ceremony with 80 guests from the realms of politics, research and librarianship
Uwe Rosemann was Director of the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) in Hannover for 18 years – from 1998 to 2016. He went into retirement on 1 October 2016. In a ceremony on 22 September 2016, 80 guests from the realms of politics, research and librarianship officially bade Uwe Rosemann farewell.
In their short welcoming speeches, Dr. Barbara Hartung (Ministry for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony and Chair of the TIB Foundation Council), Thomas Hermann (Lord Mayor of the City of Hannover), Professor Dr. Matthias Kleiner (President of the Leibniz Association) and Professor Dr. Monika Sester (Vice President of Leibniz Universität Hannover) acknowledged the outgoing Director as a competent, dedicated and composed partner. They emphasised the fact that Rosemann had defined the face of TIB and helped shape the library in a pioneering way, leading it into the digital age with farsighted vision.
In his commemorative speech, Professor Dr. Dieter W. Fellner, Director of Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD, emphasised how successfully he had collaborated with Uwe Rosemann in a number of innovative projects. In addition, he presented his personal view on the issue of the Digital Library. One topic he mentioned was the 3D modelling of objects. He vividly demonstrated the state of the art in reproducing objects by 3D printing using an reproduced apple that, on the outside at least, was virtually impossible to distinguish from a real apple.
“Uwe Rosemann is one of Germany’s leading scientific librarians,” stated Professor Dr. Wolfram Koch, Manager of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) and long-standing Chair of the TIB Advisory Board, in his laudatory speech. Rosemann leaves TIB as an institution that is well positioned, combining library and research interests.
During the ceremony, Uwe Rosemann also took the opportunity to reflect on his 23 years of service for TIB. As a library, TIB is unquestionably an important part of the research infrastructure that can look positively into the future, he said.
“TIB is a customer-oriented library, a library that continuously optimises its services, adapting them to users’ needs, a library with comprehensive collections, a library with committed employees – in a nutshell, a unique library.” He expressed his sincere gratitude to the 450+ TIB workforce. “It is they who have made the library what it is today,” said Rosemann.
In the future, a Data Science professor will be appointed to the post of TIB Director. The appointment procedure for Rosemann’s successor is currently underway.
