In seinem Vortrag erläutert Prof. Gary Gutting die Dimensionen von Foucaults Philosophie der Erfahrung (l'expérience) und skizziert das Problem der Deutung von ,Erfahrung' in Foucaults Werk. Abschließend geht Gutting auf die Beziehung von Foucault gegenüber Jean Paul Sartre und Maurice Merleau-Ponty ein.
Gary Gutting ist Professor für Philosophie an der Notre Dame University (USA). Zur Zeit hat er eine Gastprofessur am Institut für Philosophie der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt am Main. Seine fachlichen Schwerpunkte sind zeitgenössische französische Philosophie, Wissenschaftstheorie und Religionsphilosophie.
Seine jüngste Buchveröffentlichung ist "Pragmatic Liberalism and the Critique of Modernity" (1999). E ist u.a. Herausgeber des Cambridge Companion to Foucault (1994).
