This year’s visitors to the Leipzig Book Fair will be able to see a completely new version of the Reformation altar.
Thomas Tiltmann and Christian Siegel, who are members of staff at Hochschule Merseburg (Merseburg University of Applied Sciences), have created a 24 square metre textile print to serve as a substitute altar and protective wall while construction work was underway in the Town Church in Wittenberg. A smaller six square metre version will be presented by Hochschule Merseburg at the Book Fair from March 23rd. to March 26th. at the Forum Unibund joint exhibition stand in Hall 3, Stand G200.
This work of art, which is intended to encourage visitors to take a closer look at the original, shows an enlarged view of small details and regroups the scenes and figures around the crucified Christ. Extensive research was necessary in order to be able to identify the figures depicted in the scene. In the end, 20 portraits and Luther's family could be identified by name. A QR code between Luther, Melanchthon and Jesus Christ shows today's beholders the way to further information on the web.
Under the title "The Reformation Altar – Depicted in a New Light", the two artists have had an educational catalogue published by the publishing house of Hochschule Merseburg, which will also be presented at the Book Fair. Those taking part in the Reformation Quiz, held directly at the stand, have the chance to win one of four copies of the catalogue - hot off the press.
Further publications, issued by the university publishing house, publications by staff members as well as information on studies and further education at the university will also be on display at the Forum Unibund joint exhibition stand. With four lectures, the university is also well represented in the Leipzig Book Fair’s programme. In addition to a lecture on the Reformation altar, there will also be lectures on Artificial Intelligence, the Freedom of Digitalization, and the Chemistry of Chocolate.
