In the same league as Goethe, Schiller, and Grimm

Matthias Fejes Pressestelle
Technische Universität Chemnitz

Professor Christoph Fasbender, literary scholar from Chemnitz, has been accepted to the Erfurt Academy of Sciences for the Common Good

Professor Christoph Fasbender, Chair for History of Medieval and Early Modern German Literature and Language at Chemnitz University of Technology, is a new member of the Erfurt Academy of Sciences for the Common Good. Founded on July 19, 1754, this circle of scholars is the third oldest German academy of sciences in which natural and technical sciences, medical and mathematical disciplines, as well as humanities, are represented on an equal footing. During the course of its over 250-year history, the Erfurt circle, at times under the name Mainz Electoral Academy of Sciences (Kurfürstlich Mainzische Akademie nützlicher Wissenschaften), and later Prussian Academy of Sciences for the Common Good (Preußische Akademie gemeinnütziger Wissenschaften), through good and bad times has brought forth some 350 books, 3,650 lectures and well over 1,000 academic events. Its membership has included, among others, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller and Jacob Grimm.

By its own admission, the concept of common good that is reflected in the name of the Academy focuses on contributing to public welfare as both a public mission and a challenging endeavour. Together with the universities, colleges and other scientific institutions, today the Erfurt Academy represents a centre of intellectual life in the Free State of Thuringia. By means of its sessions, publications and long-term research projects, it not only enriches the Thuringian academic landscape but also promotes inter- and transdisciplinary exchange and maintains relations with distinguished persons, research institutions and associations of scholars across the globe. The Academy regards unhampered cooperation between scientists from all over the world as the prerequisite of its activities.
