Die Welt braucht einen AIDS-Impfstoff - Einladung zu Tagung & Pressegespräch im RKI am 21./22.10.03

Wann könnte es einen Impfstoff gegen das die Immunschwäche AIDS verursachende HI-Virus (HIV) geben? Welche Strategien der Impfstoffentwicklung sind am erfolgversprechendsten? Was versprechen die Versuche für eine therapeutische Impfung von HIV-Patienten mit veränderten Pockenimpfviren? Welche neuen Konzepte in der antiviralen Therapie gibt es? Diese und weitere Fragen sind Thema einer zweitägigen Konferenz zu Impfstoffentwicklung und innovativen Therapiekonzepte bei HIV/AIDS, zu der sich die führenden AIDS-Forscher Deutschlands am 21. und 22. Oktober 2003 im Robert Koch-Institut treffen. Vor der Tagung, die für Journalisten offen ist, findet ein Pressegespräch statt.

Veranstalter der Fachtagung ist die International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), die sich für die Forschung und Entwicklung von Impfstoffen gegen AIDS einsetzt und Deutschland stärker in das internationale Bemühen um einen Impfstoff einbeziehen will. Dabei wird IAVI auch von der jetzt als Journalistin tätigen früheren Bundesministerin für Gesundheit Andrea Fischer unterstützt. "Ein Impfstoff ist die einzige Möglichkeit, die Seuche AIDS weltweit eindämmen zu können", unterstreicht Reinhard Kurth, Präsident des Robert Koch-Instituts und selbst in der Impfstoffforschung aktiv.

Das Pressegespräch beginnt am 21. Oktober 2003, um 10.15 Uhr, im Robert Koch-Institut, Nordufer 20, Berlin.

Die Gesprächsteilnehmer - die auch die halbstündige "Opening Session" der Tagung bestreiten werden - sind
