Monday,January 27, marks 75 years since the liberation of the National Socialist concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau by the Red Army in 1945. At least 1.1 million people were murdered there, most of them were Jews. All over the world, victims of National Socialist Holocaust are remembered on January 27. For the occasion, the German Education Server has compiled and updated an online dossier “Holocaust Education“.
The dossier addresses anyone with an interest in the Holocaust and it especially offers support for teachers preparing Holocaust Remembrance Day. Schools play a key role in fighting antisemitism and xenophobia by using factual, didactically prepared material. The dossier offers in-depth information for Holocaust Remembrance Day and to commemorate victims of the horrific National Socialist regime. Important institutions and programmes are presented, linking to thematic sites of the United Nations, the Holocaust Remembrance organization Yad Vashem and others. The dossier also links to materials which teachers can use in their lessons, e.g. offered by the “International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance“. The editor finally recommends publications such as “Holocaust Education in a Global Context“, published by UNESCO.
