Top ratings for the University of Bayreuth in “U-Multirank”

Anja-Maria Meister Pressestelle
Universität Bayreuth

Business administration and economics at the University of Bayreuth are particularly strong in research and very good in teaching. That is the result of the 2020 "U-Multirank", which currently includes more than 1,700 universities from 92 countries around the world. 112 universities from Germany took part in this year’s assessment. U-Multirank does not actually create ranking lists, so that individual institutions do not appear ahead of or behind others. Instead, the rankings refer to specific performance indicators. In 2020, it was business studies and economics that shone in Bayreuth, making it into the best evaluation categories of A and B.

"Once again, we have received independent confirmation that we are at the top of the national and international leagues when it comes to studying business administration and economics," says Prof. Dr. Jörg Gundel, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Business & Economics at the University of Bayreuth. To illustrate this, the top grade A was given to Business Studies in the area of research for external research income, proportion of completed doctorates in relation to academic staff, research publications, citations, and most cited publications. Students of business administration and economics interviewed gave a good grade B for the area of "Teaching and Learning", i.e. general learning experience, quality of courses and teaching, organisation of the programme, contact with teachers, inclusion of practical experience, library equipment, IT provision, and room facilities. For economics, external research income, the proportion of completed doctorates in relation to academic staff in the area of "Research", and, in the "Internationalization" category, the international orientation of the master's programs and international joint publications, were also deserving of an A rating.

Overall, the University of Bayreuth in itself also scores very well in U-Multirank: "As can be seen from its sunburst chart - a snapshot of the performance profile of the University across the five U-Multirank dimensions - the University of Bayreuth is strongest in research. Its overall profile shows peak performance across different indicators, with a total of seven "A" scores (very good)," according to the multirank website https://www.umultirank.org/study-at/university-of-bayreuth-rankings. Specifically, the foreign-language master's programmes, international staff, interdisciplinary publications, as well as citation rate, research publications, and external research income are rated good to very good.

    Background to U-Multirank

U-Multirank takes a multidimensional approach to its international ranking of higher education institutions. It compares the performance of higher education institutions in five dimensions of university activity. This is based on data collected at the respective universities, student surveys, and public data. U-Multirank is an independent ranking programme created with start-up funding from the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission. While traditional global rankings focus mainly on 400-500 of the world's research universities (only about 2-3 percent of the world's universities), U-Multirank can claim to cover a much broader spectrum, including small, specialized universities, academies of art and music, technical universities, agricultural universities, universities of applied sciences, and comprehensive research universities, among others.
