They teach chemistry, economics or microbiology: Jacobs University has strengthened its teaching and research activities with a number of professors. The new faculty members were welcomed and introduced during the digital kick-off event for the start of the academic year 2020/2021.

"We welcome our new faculty members and look forward to their contribution to the further development of teaching and research at Jacobs University," says Professor Thomas Auf der Heyde, Provost of the international university. "In their research areas they are doing pioneering work. All of them are also committed to outstanding teaching. The newly appointed professors are a great enrichment for our University and for Bremen."

Professor Dr. Jan. O. Haerter moved from the Niels Bohr Institute of the University of Copenhagen to Bremen for a joint professorship at Jacobs University and the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT). At Jacobs University, the Professor of Complex Systems will support activities in the area of big data and simulations.

Professor Dr. Boran Kartal also holds a cooperation professorship. The microbiologist comes from the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen. He will start his work at Jacobs University in November 2020.

Also new at Jacobs University is Professor Dr. Carl-Dieter Garbe-Schönberg. The geochemist heads the ICP-MS laboratory at the Institute for Geosciences at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, which conducts elemental analyses of many types of geological, marine and environmental samples. Since the beginning of September 2020, he has taught and researched at Jacobs University as Adjunct Professor of Geochemistry.

Professor Dr. Bassem Bassil knows Jacobs University very well, as he holds a PhD from the international university. In addition to his work at the University of Balamand in Lebanon, he has been Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at Jacobs University since January 2020.

Also since the beginning of the year, Professor Dr. Milka Kazandziska, Professor Dr.-Ing. Mojtaba Joodaki and Dr. Omid Fatahi Valilai have enriched Jacobs University’s faculty. Dr. Kazandziska is Professor of Economics. She received her doctorate from the University of Kassel, and her areas of expertise include sustainable development and European integration. From the Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in Iran, Dr.-Ing. Joodaki, Professor of Electrical Engineering, came to Bremen. He had previously done research at the University of Kassel and worked in industry for companies such as Infineon and Qimonda. Dr. Fatahi Valilai, who also comes from Iran and previously taught at the Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, will strengthen the Mathematics and Logistics department. He teaches at Jacobs University in the Industrial Engineering and Management program.
