As part of Chancellor Angela Merkel's "Initiative Digitale Bildung" (Digital Education Initiative), Dorothee Bär, Member of the German Bundestag, Minister of State responsible for Digital Affairs in the Chancellor's Office, will be addressing the issue of teacher training at universities. In a panel discussion at the University of Bayreuth, top-class interlocutors, experts, and practitioners will shed light on current trends and issues in qualifying, in-service, and further teacher training. The programme will be broadcast on 26 March at http://www.bundesregierung.de.
The coronavirus pandemic has exposed deficits in the school system, but at the same time triggered real momentum for digitalisation at schools. What seemed unthinkable a year ago is now the norm in many places: lessons via video conferencing, papers presented as slides set to music, phsical education lessons with a fitness app.
What of all this will survive when schools are able to return to face-to-face teaching? What would be the best-possible outcome? Dorothee Bär, Member of the German Bundestag, Minister of State to the Federal Chancellor, and Federal Commissioner for Digitalisation, together with University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible, intend to host a discussion on this issue at the University of Bayreuth.
Indeed, almost 250 budding teachers graduate from the University every year. The focus will therefore be on the question of what skills teachers need these days. The event will shed light on what a university can teach in teacher training, and what it should offer as further training to those already in the teaching profession, in order to meet the challenges of the day.
A brief look abroad – Australia to be precise - will show what content and skills teachers are taught there. "We entrust our teachers with the most valuable thing we have - our children. We must therefore give future teachers the tools they need to prepare young people for their own future. Teachers deserve the highest esteem for this important task - and not just after the year we have been through," says Minister of State Dorothee Bär.
Minister of State Bär and University President Stefan Leible will welcome Janina Kugel, Supervisory Board Member, Senior Advisor and former Chief Human Resources Officer of Siemens, Member of the German Bundestag Tankred Schipanski, digital policy spokesperson of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Jürgen Böhm, Chair of the German Secondary Modern School Teachers' Association, Moritz Meusel, State Coordinator of the Bavarian State Student Representative Council, Elisabeth Götz, Head Teacher of Markgräfin-Wilhelmine-Gymnasium Bayreuth, Celine Zander, student teacher, and Dr. Matthias Ehmann, Head of the Digital Learning and Teaching Lab at the University of Bayreuth.
The discussion revolves around the questions of what students expect and what teachers expect? Do we need new didactics for the 21st century classroom and in remote teaching? How do teachers navigate the (overwhelming) range of digital options? What guidelines do they need? Will teachers of the future be coaches or lecturers, project managers or examiners, people who work through curricula or creative innovators? And who will initiate these far-reaching changes?
