Max-Planck-Institut für Kolloid- und Grenzflächenforschung

(Potsdam) Prof. Dr. Markus Antonietti has been named an Honorary Fellow of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS). A letter from the society indicates this election as “a lifetime appointment” and "the highest honor bestowed on the world's most distinguished chemists". Antonietti is now one of 60 Honorary Fellows, 20 of whom are from Europe and five from Germany.

Markus Antonietti was selected for his contribution to the progress of chemistry in general as well as to the development of chemistry in China. "This award is important to me because knowledge and education enable mutual understanding and put enemy images into perspective," says Markus Antonietti. He is well-known international scientist in the field of materials chemistry and polymer chemistry. The society justifies its choice by stating that he has made a series of outstanding innovations and achievements in cross-border areas such as the synthesis of new polymers and sol-gel chemistry, porous polymers and carbon materials, crystallization control, green chemistry and, more recently, carbon-negative materials and processes, energy storage and artificial photosynthesis (raw materials from CO2 and light).

At the same time, Markus Antonietti has made excellent contributions in cooperative research and talent training with China, the proclamation letter said: He has visited China many times for academic purposes and scientific research collaboration, and has established two Sino-German cooperation partner groups and two international cooperation joint laboratories there. Moreover, he was awarded an honorary chair by the University of Science and Technology of China, Zhejiang University and Fuzhou University.

    About the Chinese Chemical Society
The Chinese Chemical Society was founded in 1932 and currently has 75,000 members, 60 of whom are honorary members. CCS Honorary Fellows have been appointed since 2009 and are limited to a total of 100 individuals.
