The digital economy is dominated by large platforms such as Facebook, Google, and Amazon. What are the consequences for the economy and society? In our novel Distinguished Keynote Series 'Digital Platform Ecosystems (DPE) ', an interdisciplinary team from the University of Passau headed by the business information systems expert Professor Jan Krämer and the innovation researcher Professor Andreas König will be bringing outstanding international scientists to Passau digitally.
'One of the key phenomena of the digital economy is the emergence of digital platforms and the ecosystems around them. However, research into digital platform ecosystems is still in its early stages – also because of their continuing dynamic development', says Professor Jan Krämer, who holds the Chair of Internet and Telecommunications Business at the University of Passau. 'Many studies on digital platform ecosystems conclude that researchers should form more transdisciplinary teams than before to help them understand how digital platforms affect, and are affected by, the economy and society', adds Professor Andreas König, holder of the Chair of Strategic Management, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. For this reason, together with seven colleagues from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Information Systems and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, they will be organising a 'Distinguished Keynote Series' in the summer semester of 2021, an English-language course of lectures with outstanding talks on the subject of 'digital platform ecosystems.' Indeed, the team will be bringing some of the internationally most renowned researchers on the topic of digital platform ecosystems to Passau digitally in Zoom webinars.
The keynote series starts on Thursday, 29 April at 4 p.m., with a lecture by Professor Robert Gregory from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. He analyses how algorithms organise and monitor employees in platform enterprises such as the ride-hailing and ride-sharing mediator Uber – and what effect that has on the employees. The other lectures cover topics such as the supposed contradiction between data protection and data flow, the socio-economic benefit of social networks, and the question of whether and how Twitter is changing people's electoral behaviour. The keynote lectures will take place in the summer semester on Mondays and Thursdays at 4 p.m.
The lecture series 'Digital Platform Ecosystems' is part of a larger field of research into digital platform ecosystems, data economy and artificial intelligence which is establishing itself at the University of Passau: scientists from all the faculties are researching the topic from different points of view. These range from the intelligent control of these Internet giants via the reaction of managers to digital competition to the question of how digital platforms are altering the public discourse.
