Talking about intercultural experiences in the “Virtual Safe Space”

Matthias Fejes Pressestelle und Crossmedia-Redaktion
Technische Universität Chemnitz

Confidential, anonymous and digital – The project “TUCinterdigital” has a new offer to talk about intercultural experiences and challenges

As an international or even local student, you can face many challenges when beginning to study at a German university. That does not only concern i.e. different expectations in the various forms of teaching but also in dealing with lecturers and fellow students. These different expectations depend on individual and intercultural aspects. Questions can arise such as: What is expected in a group work? How to make a good presentation? How does a consultation hour look like? What is the best time to contact my professor in person?
For clarifying these questions, the International Office of Chemnitz University of Technology offers with the “Virtual Safe Space” a safe space for exchanging experiences. This space is part of the project “TUCinterdigital” that is financially supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

Especially international students, PhD-students and members of the university staff can talk anonymously and frankly about their intercultural experiences and challenges by either using an online form or the virtual room on BigBlueButton as possible communication channels. All messages and talks are treated confidentially.

Based on the anonymized experiences, the project aims at introducing offers at Chemnitz University of Technology that support students and members of the university staff when encountering intercultural challenges.

    Background: Model Project TUCinterdigital

TUCinterdigital that is financially supported by the DAAD until the end of 2023 aims at several outcomes: On the one hand side, to increase the study success of (international) students and to ease the start of studying and on the other hand, to strengthen the subject-related support as well as to enhance the intercultural competence. The offers address prospective and current (international) students, PhD-students and university staff members. All offers will be available on the digital information and communication platform DigiAssist that is in development.
