NUI regional ranking: Munich rural district remains at the top

Dr. Jutta Gröschl Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Institut für Mittelstandsforschung (IfM) Bonn

For the third time running, the rural district of Munich takes the top spot in the NUI region ranking in 2020. Since 1998, Institute für Mittelstandforschung (IfM) Bonn has published the number of regional business registrations per 10,000 inhabitants of working age (New Entrepreneurial Initiative - NUI) every year. The study takes business start-ups, takeovers, and relocations of commercial enterprises, as well as the start-up of a secondary commercial activity into account. The NUI regional ranking is calculated by ranking the NUI indicator values.

For the third time running, the rural district of Munich takes the top spot in the NUI region ranking in 2020. The following ranks are held by the city of Leverkusen, the rural district of Miesbach, the city of Rosenheim, and the rural district of Starnberg.

The city of Kempten (Allgäu) and the rural districts of Dachau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen rose to the TOP 20 group. At the same time, the city of Schwabach returned to the top group. In contrast, the cities of Wiesbaden and Baden-Baden and the rural districts of Ebersberg and Marburg-Biedenkopf no longer made the TOP-20.

A total of 11 rural districts and cities in Bavaria (mainly in the greater Munich area), four in Hesse (greater Frankfurt a. M. area), Berlin, one city in North Rhine-Westphalia (Leverkusen), and one rural district each in Schleswig-Holstein (Nordfriesland), Saxony (Görlitz) and Brandenburg (Teltow-Fläming) are in the top twenty.

The new entrepreneurial initiative can be very different within a federal state. For years, this aspect has been observed in Bavaria and Hesse, for example: While the NUI value in the Rhine-Main conurbation and around the state capital Munich is very high, other parts of the state are only in the middle or lower third of the NUI regional ranking. This result, in turn, affects the overall ranking in the national comparison: Hesse is in 4th place, Bavaria in 5th place.

NUI value remains highest in the city-state of Berlin
Many economic limitations marked 2020; such as the Covid19 pandemic and Brexit, the automotive industry crisis, and the reintroduction of compulsory master craftsmanship in some trades. Nevertheless, the propensity to start a business fell only slightly on average in all rural districts compared to the previous year. Hamburg showed the most significant decline, followed by Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, and Schleswig-Holstein. Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Lower Saxony, and Saarland, on the other hand, recorded a slight increase. The highest NUI value reached the city-state of Berlin again.
