Statement from the University of Greifswald on the War in Ukraine

Jan Meßerschmidt Hochschulkommunikation
Universität Greifswald

The University of Greifswald endorses the statement of the Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany (http://www.dfg.de/en/dfg_profile/alliance/index.html). This states that: ‘The Alliance regards the Russian invasion as an attack on the fundamental values of freedom, democracy and self-determination, which in turn provide the basis for academic freedom and opportunities for academic cooperation. The organisations of the Alliance have long maintained diverse and productive academic collaborations with their partners in Ukraine. They have our full solidarity at this moment!’

We strongly condemn the war of aggression dictated by Vladimir Putin and are gravely concerned about colleagues, friends and their families.

The professorship for Ukrainian cultural studies, the annual Ukrainicum that is organised jointly with the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg (Institute for Advanced Studies), two partner universities, as well as students and members of staff from Ukraine demonstrate the strong ties between the University and the Ukrainian language and culture.

The University of Greifswald declares its solidarity with Ukrainian research partners and will do everything within its powers to provide support to Ukrainian academics and students, whether in the form of periods of research/study at our university, in the form of counselling for those who are psychologically strained by the war or by organising aid for Ukrainians who have remained in the war zone and refugees at a private level.

The statement from the Alliance of Science Organisations in Germany continues, ‘it is recommend that academic cooperation with state institutions and business enterprises in Russia be frozen with immediate effect until further notice, that German research funds no longer benefit Russia, and that no joint events take place of an academic nature or those pertaining to research policy. New cooperation projects should not be initiated at the present time.’ The University of Greifswald also adopts this stance.

This decision, which will also stall long-term relationships between colleagues, is of course painful. We welcome Russian students to our university every year. Only recently, we initiated a joint degree course with the University of St. Petersburg, the master’s degree course ‘International Language and Communication’. The Department of Slavonic Studies provides a relevant cross section of East and West Slavic languages, literatures and cultures that are taught and researched to an equal extent. We greatly respect and declare our solidarity with all academics and students, who do not support the Russian invasion or publicly deplore the war.

Whether and how connections can be maintained at a personal level will have to be considered individually. An exchange with Russian institutions at institutional level is not acceptable in light of the current circumstances.

International collaboration plays an important role at the University of Greifswald and we very much regret the consequences of such decisions. However, there is currently no other way. Now’s the time for taking a clear and noticeable stand for peace.
