The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) and the Max Rubner-Institut (MRI) are running a three-day seminar for an international audience of specialists in food safety and authenticity, starting on 14 March 2022. The online course, which is being offered twice in the same week due to the time difference, addresses experts in the fields of food quality control, science and pertinent administration. Some 500 registered participants indicate that BVL and MRI have hit the mark with their choice of topics.
On three consecutive days, people around the world who deal with the safety and authenticity of foodstuffs will be offered a very special kind of in-service training course: Entitled “International Training for Safer Food”, the course will feature experts from BVL and MRI who will present papers that reveal the opportunities for and limits of safe food production, and how the products manufactured can be controlled with regard to safety and authenticity. Prof. Pablo Steinberg, President of the Max Rubner-Institut: “When it comes to food fraud, we only get to see the tip of the iceberg. That’s why events like ITS Food are so important for knowledge transfer and for our efforts to curb food fraud worldwide.”
On one of the three training days, the focus will be on food authenticity: Experts from BVL and MRI will report directly on their active research, presenting the existing raft of methods as well as current developments in the field. The question as to whether poultry sausages really only do contain poultry or whether there isn’t some cow or pig in there somewhere can usually be proven in the lab; it is also becoming ever easier to determine geographical origin. But there are also areas in which research still can’t provide any really reliable answers. Important information about the relevant legislation and controls will also be on the agenda.
Representing the most diverse disciplines, some 500 individuals from Greece to Bulgaria and from Saudi-Arabia to Morocco and Ethiopia have registered for the seminar during which two federal agencies within the remit of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture will contribute their strengths and expertise. With participants from 69 countries, it is certain everyone will benefit from sharing ideas, the hosts not excluded. Only a joint effort will make it easier to ensure the safety and authenticity of foodstuffs in Germany and across the world.
