Positive evaluation of IFW Dresden by the Senate of the Leibniz Association secures funding for another seven years
The Senate of the Leibniz Association has certified that the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) is performing outstanding, internationally recognized research in the field of solid-state research and materials science. In its statement the Senate of the Leibniz Association recommends that the federal and state governments continue the funding of the IFW Dresden as an institution of transregional importance and nation-wide interest.
The IFW was evaluated by an external expert commission on July 6, 2021; due to the pandemic in a remote substitute procedure. In the statement published on March 16, 2022, the Senate of the Leibniz Association emphasized that the IFW provides its employees with an excellent research environment for scientific qualification and has successfully enhanced the transfer of new findings into application. Since the last evaluation, the IFW has successfully implemented a new research program based on the three pillars of quantum phenomena, functional materials and nanomaterials. In particular, the research achievements of IFW are positively highlighted, which are impressively evidenced by a large number of outstanding third party funded projects, including seven ERC grants, three Leibniz Junior Groups since 2015 as well as the significant participation in the Cluster of Excellence "Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter (ct.qmat)”.
"I am very happy about the positive evaluation and would like to thank all employees for their highly committed participation in the evaluation, which was limited to a substitute procedure without an on-site visit due to the pandemic," says Professor Dr. Bernd Büchner, Scientific Director of IFW Dresden. "Especially the high quality of the scientific work in cooperation with strong partners, but also the success in international competition convinced the evaluators. In addition, I am very pleased that the reviewers have approved our plans to further develop the IFW research program in the direction of quantum technology. This will give our plans for a strategic expansion of the institute the necessary impetus. Together with the ongoing appointment procedures for two director positions and with the plans for a new building on the TU Dresden campus, we are thus setting the course for the positive development of the IFW far beyond the period of the next seven years until the next evaluation.”
Juliane Schmidt, Administrative Director of IFW Dresden, adds: "I am very pleased that the achievements of the science-supporting areas have also been explicitly acknowledged. In particular, the research technology division, which includes IT security, is highlighted in the evaluation report as an important basis for the successful work of the IFW. We hope that our joint new building plans with the ct.qmat cluster of excellence, which will significantly improve the infrastructure, can now be started soon as well."
Background:
Each Leibniz institution is evaluated externally on a regular basis, at least every seven years. Internationally recognized experts evaluate the performance and structures of the institutes. The basis for the evaluation is a written document from the institution and, as a general rule, an on-site visit of the institute. As evaluation visits had to be cancelled in the past months due to the pandemic, the evaluation of the institutions was carried out via a substitute procedure with digital meetings and written assessments.
The results of the evaluation are recorded in an evaluation report, on which the evaluated institution can comment. On this basis, the Senate of the Leibniz Association adopts a science policy statement that contains recommendations for further funding of the Leibniz institution.
This Senate statement is used by the Joint Science Conference of the Federal and State Governments to review the funding requirements. Together with the appendices A (description of the essential contents and structures of the institution), B (evaluation report) and C (statement of the institution on the evaluation report), the senate statements are published on the internet site of the Leibniz Association. All committees involved in the evaluation and assessment are staffed exclusively with persons who do not work at Leibniz institutions.
