Hannover Medical School: Director of the ORL Clinic honored for special services to hearing rehabilitation

Today, Friday, April 22, the Minister President of Lower Saxony, Stephan Weil, awarded Professor Dr. Thomas Lenarz the Order of Merit of Lower Saxony. With this honor, the state recognizes the services of the Director of the Department of Otolaryngology at the Hannover Medical School (MHH) with special state political weight: "Professor Lenarz has ensured that many children and adults can hear again and has made Hannover the world's largest center for cochlear implantation," said Prime Minister Weil at the award ceremony. "It is a special pleasure for me to award such an outstanding physician and scientist with the Order of Merit of Lower Saxony. The state owes him a great deal: With his extraordinary, long-standing and multifaceted commitment, Professor Lenarz has helped many people and rendered outstanding services to science in Lower Saxony."

For the physician, the award of the Order of Merit is a special honor. "I have dedicated my work over the past 40 years to the goal - hearing for all," Professor Lenarz emphasized. "Helping people find their way out of silence and into the world of hearing is our mission. We are well on our way to achieving this goal for as many children and adults as possible - thanks to the joint efforts of everyone involved. There is still a lot to do, let's tackle it in Lower Saxony, in Germany and in the world."

The ENT clinic at the MHH has now enabled more than 10,000 affected people to hear (again) - and with it educational, professional and participation opportunities. In 2003, Professor Lenarz founded the German Hearing Center at MHH as a unique facility for the integrated treatment of all patients with hearing loss. In addition to clinical care, he has driven research for the continuous improvement of hearing rehabilitation, diagnostics and hearing systems as a clear focus of the clinic, so that all four western manufacturers of cochlear implants have long since located their research facilities near MHH. A further expression of this emphasis is the Institute of AudioNeurotechnology (VIANNA) in the Lower Saxony Center for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research and Development (NIFE), which he founded and which is now an excellent hearing research institution of international standing, as well as the establishment of the Cluster of Excellence "Hearing4all", founded jointly with the University of Oldenburg and the Leibniz Universität Hannover, with a good 200 researchers. The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved the cluster's second funding period until 2025.
