New assistant professorship explores the role of social and cultural background as well as gender in education

Philip Stirm Referat Kommunikation
DIPF | Leibniz-Institut für Bildungsforschung und Bildungsinformation

Social and cultural background as well as gender have a strong influence on the educational opportunities and educational paths of children and adolescents. With a new professor position affiliated to DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education and to Goethe University Frankfurt research in this field shall be strengthened and extended: Dr. Hanna Beißert has now been appointed to this Assistant Professorship for Educational Science with a Focus on Teaching and Heterogeneity.

"In my new position, I will run extensive research on the role of gender and background in the education system - and on the question of how to reduce their influence on educational decisions and educational opportunities," explains Professor Beißert. In particular, the scientist would like to focus on two research areas: (1.) cognitive development and talent promotion in elementary school as well as gender- and background-related inequalities in STEM education, and (2.) the socio-moral development of children with a strong focus on social exclusion in heterogeneous educational contexts. "It is also a central concern of mine that the results of my research reach educational practice too. I will specifically support this science-practice communication," the educational researcher emphasizes.

At DIPF, Professor Beißert will work in the department "Teacher and Teaching Quality". At Goethe University, the professorship is part of the Department of Educational Sciences. The professorship is also located at the interdisciplinary research center "Individual Development and Adaptive Education of Children at Risk" (IDeA) coordinated by the DIPF and with Goethe University as one of the founding institutions. IDeA investigates children's developmental and learning processes and ways to support them.

"We are very pleased that with Hanna Beißert, we have been able to attract an excellent scientist as the new professor. The professorship perfectly complements the range of research topics at the DIPF. As one of its focal points, the institute aims to examine the various preconditions and trajectories of educational processes and thus contributes to more equitable educational opportunities," says Prof. Dr. Kai Maaz, Executive Director of the DIPF. Prof. Dr. Christiane Thompson, Vice President of Goethe University, adds: "Goethe University and DIPF have been working closely together for many years to expand knowledge for good education with excellent research. The appointment of Hanna Beißert, who we warmly congratulate, is another step to deepen this important cooperation."

Hanna Beißert has been working as a researcher at the DIPF for quite some time. There, among other things, she leads several projects related to the focus of the professorship, which she will continue and further develop in the context of her new position. The researcher studied educational science, sociology and psychology at the University of Mannheim and received her doctorate in psychology from Goethe University. Most recently, she worked as a substitute professor in the field of empirical educational research at the University of Konstanz.
