Cyberagentur plans preliminary study on alternative computer architectures - Interest conference

    The Agentur für Innovation in der Cybersicherheit - “Innovation for cybersecurity” (Cyberagentur) intends to commission a preliminary study on alternative computer architectures that go beyond the current binary logic based on semiconductor chips in the near future. A conference will be held in early May to explore the market.

    On 3 May 2023, from 14:00 to 16:00, the Cyberagentur is calling for an "Interest Conference on Alternative Computer Architectures". "We want to get an overview of the market in preparation for the subsequent call for proposals," says the Cyberagentur's project manager and research officer for Secure Systems, Satyajit Ravindra. Among other things, the aim is to draw the attention of potential contractors to the future call for tenders for a preliminary study and to gather information on the concretisation of the order, the feasibility in terms of time and content. The focus will be on the project presentation "Alternative Computer Architectures", the intended award procedure as well as the subject matter discussions.
    The planned call for tenders for the preliminary study on "Alternative Computer Architectures" is one of the many research topics of the Cyberagentur. The goal is to research newly conceived computer models that go beyond the current binary logic based on semiconductor chips. "The background of the future research project," explains Satyajit Ravindra, "is the current developments that are reaching their physical limits. By using a different architecture, new capabilities could be unlocked, especially in the area of security. “
    The preliminary study will therefore reveal the extent to which the different architectures can better resist attack vectors to enable a more robust computing system.
    "The production of semiconductor chips requires the use of strategic raw materials," Satyajit Ravindra explains. "Architectures that minimise or eliminate this need could contribute to technological independence. Computers and data centres require a high and constant supply of energy to operate. Computing architectures that are orders of magnitude more efficient could help deliver computing power without reliance on a well-functioning supply chain network."
    The study aims to compile and compare the different architectures in a framework and match them with the security-related needs of the demand drivers. "We assume that the form and content of the framework document will be continuously developed both during and after the project," Satyajit Ravindra emphasises. Therefore, the preferred way of working can best be described as "agile". The total duration of the project is scheduled for 9 months. The final results of this preliminary study will be compiled in the form of a (digital) framework and the results will be presented to the Cyberagentur.
    Based on the results of the preliminary study, a larger research competition will follow to explore the individual architectures.
