Tomorrow, Professor Moritz Schularick will take over as President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. This marks the end of the interim period during which the scientific leadership was in the hands of Professors Holger Görg and Stefan Kooths. The 47-year-old is an internationally renowned economist whose research focuses on global financial markets and issues of economic inequality.
At his inauguration, Schularick made it clear that expanding the Institute's international scientific reputation and advising policymakers on geo-economic issues will be strategic priorities in the coming years. "I am looking forward to starting in Kiel and would like to thank the government of Schleswig-Holstein, the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) and the Institute's committees for supporting my appointment and welcoming my development plans for the Institute with great openness. The Institute is excellently positioned, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to lead it into the next phase of its development. We want to expand our presence in Berlin and make it even more attractive for excellent researchers. To this end, the number of professorships at the Institute will increase significantly. In terms of content, we will focus on examining the economic effects of the changing geopolitical situation and providing policymakers with solutions."
State Secretary Guido Wendt, Chairman of the Institute's Board of Trustees, described Moritz Schularick as the ideal choice for the scientific leadership of the Institute: "Professor Schularick takes over the presidency of the Kiel Institute at a very appropriate time. In this phase of geopolitical upheaval, we need specialists like him who can research and explain economic consequences with international scientific expertise. We are looking forward to strengthening Schleswig-Holstein as a location for science and increasing its visibility in Berlin."

About Moritz Schularick
Moritz Schularick, born in 1975, was most recently Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Bonn, Director of the MacroFinance Lab there, and Professor at Sciences Po (Paris). He is a member of the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute and a full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europea. Previously, he conducted research at New York University, the University of Cambridge, Freie Universität Berlin, and in the research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, among others. He is a recipient of the 2022 Leibniz Prize, Germany's most prestigious research prize, awarded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 2018, he received the Gossen Prize of the Verein für Socialpolitik, the most prestigious award given to German economists. He is editor of the most important European journal for economic policy, "Economic Policy."
His research includes financial markets and asset prices, issues in monetary macroeconomics, and the causes of financial crises and economic inequality. He regularly advises central banks, ministries of finance, investors, and international organizations.

About the Kiel Institute for the World Economy
The Kiel Institute for the World Economy sees itself as the research institute in Germany for globalization issues. Its researchers investigate the drivers and effects of international economic activity, the integration and disintegration of global markets as well as the opportunities and limits of political action in open economies. The Institute’s declared aim is to identify emerging global economic challenges and develop practical solutions that are compatible with open markets and competition while also taking into account the living standards of all.
The Kiel Institute has approximately 170 staff, including 100 academics. The annual budget is around EUR 15.5 million (2022). The core funding for the Institute comes from the German federal government and the State of Schleswig-Holstein. In addition, the Institute raises third-party funding for research and other projects. The new two-member board is now made up of the President as Scientific Director and Birgit Austen, the Executive Administrative Director.
