Call: "Science Journalist in Residence" program at ISTA

Andreas Rothe Communications and Events
Institute of Science and Technology Austria

The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) is offering science journalists the opportunity for a paid three-month “Journalist in Residence” program starting in April 2024. Applications are open until Oct. 31, 2023.

The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) in Klosterneuburg – in the immediate vicinity of Vienna – is a PhD-granting research institute. Opened in 2009, the Institute is dedicated to basic research in the natural sciences, mathematics and computer sciences. The Institute has a total of 1000 employees and 75 different research groups – and thus many exciting scientific topics.

“ISTA aims to promote high-quality science journalism,” explains Florian Schlederer, Head of Communications & Events at ISTA. “The Journalist in Residence program aims to facilitate exchange between journalists and researchers and explore new ways to make research results accessible to a broader public.”

For three months, science journalists are invited to accompany two research groups at ISTA. They will have the opportunity to dive deep into cutting-edge interdisciplinary research on campus while pursuing their own independent science journalism projects. They will share their communication expertise with the scientists on campus through lectures or workshops. A total of € 15,000 will be refunded for the residency.

By the way: ISTA also offers artists the opportunity to exchange and interact with scientists through the Institute's “Artist in Residence” program.
