UR Professor Elected Fellow of the American Physical Society

Bastian Schmidt Präsidialabteilung, Bereich Kommunikation & Marketing
Universität Regensburg

Prof. Dr. Franz J. Gießibl honored for outstanding research

Prof. Dr. Franz J. Gießibl, Chair of Quantum Nanoscience at the University of Regensburg, has been named a "Fellow of the American Physical Society" by the American Physical Society at its September Council meeting. The election is a prestigious recognition of the outstanding contributions Prof. Giessibl has made to physics with his research. The certificate bears the following note: "For the invention of force sensors that achieve sub-Angstrom spatial resolution and for advancements in atomic force microscopy."

"I am very pleased to receive this award from America. At the same time, I thank my university and its staff and students. The work is not done with an invention alone; societal benefit requires a proof of concept and an implementation in the real world, and our university provides an excellent environment for this implementation," the honoree is pleased to say.
"Most APS Fellows work at US universities," notes the acting Dean of the Department of Physics, Prof. Dr John Lupton. "It is a clear sign of the international appeal of our department that a member of our faculty is now also represented in this prestigious circle."
