Sustainability is ecologic, economic and social - the big influence of seaport

Vivienne Kochanowski Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
ISL - Institut für Seeverkehrswirtschaft und Logistik

ISL position paper: Seaports as key players - Sustainable development for the future of global supply chains

The international community's commitment to economically, ecologically and socially sustainable development also affects all major seaports and confronts them with complex decisions.

Holistic sustainable port development requires long-term strategic planning and, if necessary, even a separation from existing business segments in order to survive in a difficult competitive environment. At the same time, new business segments are opening up for ports.

In its current position paper, ISL looks at the various levers and tools seaports have at hand to support the sustainable development of global supply chains at four levels - port administration, port area, transport chains and economy. It is shown that seaports must fulfil their role at all four levels in order for the global transition to sustainable development to succeed. This change in turn offers seaports the opportunity to use their strengths to expand existing business areas and tap into new potentials.

ISL's position on sustainable port development can be found in the current position paper "Seaports’ Contribution Towards Sustainable Development".
