3rd GLACIER Symposium in Halle / Saale: Major meeting of pandemic researchers from Germany and Latin America

Dipl.Biol. Sylvia Pieplow Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Institut für Pflanzenbiochemie

The 3rd International One Health GLACIER Symposium will take place at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) from August 20 to 22, 2024. In addition to scientists from Europe, Israel and the USA, participants from Latin America and the World Health Organization (WHO) are expected to attend the conference.

Experts from the fields of medicine, biology, chemistry and pharmacy, as well as stakeholders from the healthcare system and social sciences, will present their studies on infectious diseases, new epidemics and how to combat them in seven different thematic areas. The range of topics includes not only the development of new drugs and vaccines, but also the social impact of epidemics on society. For the first time, there will be a section on science communication in pandemic scenarios at this conference. The GLACIER symposium is being organized under the leadership of Prof. Ludger Wessjohann from the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB) and Prof. Barbara Seliger from the Institute of Medical Immunology at MLU. The Colombian Ambassador H.E. Yadir Salazar Mejía and the Cuban Ambassador H.E. Juana Martinez Gonzalez as well as representatives of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the Leibniz Association and MLU will give welcoming speeches at the beginning.
GLACIER stands for German-Latin American Center for Infection and Epidemiology Research & Training. The project is a multidisciplinary consortium of educational and research institutions, the private sector, foundations and ministries from Germany, Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama and Guatemala. The aim of the project is not only to develop vaccines and therapies for new infectious diseases, but above all to strengthen Latin American countries in detecting and combating pandemics at an early stage. Under the leadership of the Charité Institute of Virology at the University Medical Center in Berlin, the Institute of Medical Immunology at MLU and the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry, partner institutions in Latin America are to be supported in the development of local research infrastructure and in the training of young scientists. The University of Havana and the National Autonomous University of Mexico are the main players overseas. Central research and training laboratories have been established there in cooperation with IPB, MLU and Charité. GLACIER is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office through the DAAD Global Centers for Health and Pandemic Prevention program.
