Max Planck Institute employs five of the world's most cited scientists
Potsdam – Researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology (MPI-MP) are once again among the most cited scientists worldwide in 2024. The annual Clarivate report lists five scientists from the institute among the 0.1% most frequently cited researchers. This emphasizes the significant influence of cutting-edge research in Potsdam on the international scientific community.
This year, five scientists from the Potsdam-based institute have made it to the world-class list: Prof. Dr. Ralph Bock, director of the institute, conducts research on the cell organelles of plants and links this work with biotechnological and ecophysiological issues. Alisdair Fernie and Dr. Saleh Alseekh, who is on the list for the first time, are researching the metabolic processes of crop plants and their genetics. Dr. John Lunn and Prof. Dr. Mark Stitt are working intensively on the regulation of plant metabolism, photosynthesis and plant growth. The work of the five scientists from Potsdam contributes significantly to our understanding of the complex biological processes by which plants adapt to their environment and highlights the significant international influence of the research conducted at the MPI-MP.

The Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam is one of the world's leading institutes for plant research. It conducts basic research in the fields of plant physiology, genetics, epigenetics and plant-microbe interactions with the aim of comprehensively understanding the growth and development of plants and the interaction of plants and their environment.
With this renewed distinction, the MPI-MP is consolidating its position as a leading research institute and contributing significantly to the international visibility of German science.
Background:
The success and influence of scientists are measured by the number of citations of their research papers by other scientists. The more frequently a scientist's work is cited, the greater their influence in their respective field of research. In an annual report, the Clarivate Group identifies the top 0.1% of the world's most frequently cited scientists. The report analyzes data from the Essential Science Indicators™ (ESI) database and classifies researchers into 21 fields according to their research topics. This year, five researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam are among the 332 highly cited researchers in Germany. With a total of 56 highly cited scientists in 84 institutes, the Max Planck Society ranks 9th among all research institutions worldwide.
