The Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) congratulates Prof. Jonathan Pfaff, Head of the Video Coding Technologies Group, on his new professorship. Since March 1, Prof. Pfaff has been leading the newly established chair of “Machine Learning and Data Compression” at the Institute of Computer Science and Computational Science at the University of Potsdam. His group at Fraunhofer HHI will closely collaborate with the Potsdam team moving forward.
As our world grows increasingly connected, the demand for fast, reliable data transmission is accelerating—making efficient data processing more essential than ever. With bandwidth resources limited, advanced data compression technologies play a key role. They drive more effective transmission within available bandwidth, and are essential to enabling sustainable, high-performance communications networks and data-driven applications for the future.
Prof. Pfaff’s research focuses on developing optimized techniques for efficient data compression. Increasingly, his work leverages machine learning methods to better model the statistical properties of data —for the sake of significantly improving compression performance.
“We’re excited to deepen our collaboration with the University of Potsdam,” says Dr. Detlev Marpe, Head of the Video Communication and Applications Department at Fraunhofer HHI. “With decades of experience developing technologies for globally deployed international video coding standards, we have a particular know-how in translating cutting-edge research into real-world applications. Our mission is to create technologies that deliver meaningful impact where it matters most—at the user level.”
At Fraunhofer HHI, Prof. Pfaff combines foundational research with the development of practical, solution-oriented technologies. Together with his team, he plays a leading role in shaping global compression standards. A key part of this work involves active participation in international standardization bodies. Prof. Pfaff and his group have made significant contributions to the development of the current video coding standard, Versatile Video Coding (H.266 / VVC).
“As digital technologies continue to evolve, video data is becoming increasingly relevant far beyond traditional consumer electronics—in areas like healthcare, mobility, and information security,” says Prof. Pfaff. “Our research in video compression lays the technological groundwork for many of these transformative applications.”

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.
You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).
Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.
You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).
If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
