Agrobioinformatics – Master's programme for the future of agriculture

Charlotte Brückner-Ihl Presse, Kommunikation und Marketing
Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen

Computer science and knowledge about modern agriculture – International programme starts in the winter semester 2025/26 at Justus Liebig University Giessen – Applications open from 1st May 2025

Modern agriculture relies more than ever on innovative solutions in a world shaped by the consequences of climate change, global food insecurity, and a growing population. Furthermore, the increasing digitalisation of agriculture and the necessity to efficiently process large volumes of data present significant challenges. The new Master's programme "Agrobioinformatics" at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) prepares students for practical applications, offers them interdisciplinary training, and imparts essential knowledge in the fields of bioinformatics, agricultural sciences, genetics, data analysis, and software development. The international programme will commence in the Winter Semester 2025/26 at JLU, with the application phase beginning on 1st May 2025:

“We are launching the Master’s programme ‘Agrobioinformatics’ with the aim of training the next generation of professionals who will work at the interface of computer science, biology, and agriculture,” says Prof. Dr. Matthias Frisch, Study Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences, and Environmental Management. The international programme utilises modern biotechnological and computational methods around Big Data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to make agriculture sustainable for the future. The new degree programme is aimed at German and international Bachelor's graduates in agricultural sciences, (bio)informatics, biology, or related fields.

The programme is designed to span four semesters and will be taught entirely in English. Students will learn to analyse and interpret biological data – such as genomic data from plants and animals – using tools and methods from computer science. They will receive comprehensive computer training that ranges from the basics of programming to quantitative genetics and the development of analysis pipelines. “The combination of computer science and agricultural sciences makes this programme particularly unique, and in this form, it is hitherto the only one of its kind in Germany,” emphasises Prof. Dr. Agnieszka Golicz, professor for Agrobioinformatics at JLU. She is convinced that “graduates who successfully complete their Master’s studies with expertise in both agricultural sciences and bioinformatics will have a wealth of career opportunities in a rapidly growing and important sector.” Potential fields of employment include industry – such as biotechnological or agricultural technology companies – government ministries or agencies, environmental organisations, healthcare, NGOs, or research institutions.

The application deadline ends uniformly on 15th June 2025. International prospective students can seek advice from the International Office at JLU, while all others can contact the Central Student Advisory Service (ZSB) at Justus Liebig University Giessen for further information.

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
