Two International Recognitions for Max Planck Researcher Karol Myszkowski

Karol Myszkowski, Group Leader and Senior Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken, Germany, has received two prestigious international honors: The ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques (ACM SIGGRAPH) – part of the world’s largest scientific association for computer science, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) – has named him a member of the ACM SIGGRAPH Academy. In addition, the European Association for Computer Graphics (Eurographics) has appointed him as a Fellow. Both honors recognize his foundational contributions to High Dynamic Range (HDR) Imaging and his pioneering work in the field of Perceptual Rendering.

Being named to the ACM SIGGRAPH Academy is considered one of the highest international honors in computer graphics research. The ACM SIGGRAPH Academy recognizes individuals who have made substantial contributions to the field of computer graphics and interactive techniques. Academy members are regarded as principal leaders in the discipline whose work has shaped both academic research and industrial innovation. Karol Myszkowski was selected for his foundational contributions to Perceptual Rendering – methods for image generation that are guided by human visual perception – and to High Dynamic Range Imaging, a technique that enables particularly rich contrasts and detailed image representations.

The appointment as Eurographics Fellow was announced on 14 May at the 46th Annual Eurographics Conference in London. It is one of the highest honors in computer graphics research in Europe. In the official laudation, Myszkowski is described as one of the early key contributors to HDR imaging, who has conducted foundational work in applying perceptual principles to computer graphics rendering for over 25 years.

His research group at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge on image perception and the development of imaging algorithms with embedded computational models of the human visual system. His scholarly output includes 39 publications at Eurographics conferences and in the journal "Computer Graphics Forum", as well as 40 papers presented at leading international venues such as ACM SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, and published in "ACM Transactions on Graphics", underscoring the breadth and impact of his scientific work. Among his most influential publications is the co-authored textbook "High Dynamic Range Imaging", now considered a standard reference in the field with over 2,700 citations. Several of Myszkowski’s developments have also found practical application and have been licensed by the technology company Dolby.

Karol Myszkowski has been conducting research at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics since 2000, where he leads the research group HDR Imaging, Rendering and Advanced Displays as a tenured Senior Researcher. Prior to that, he worked for many years in Japan, including as an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Software at the University of Aizu. He began his academic career at the Technical University of Szczecin. He received his PhD in 1991 and his habilitation in 2001, both in computer science from the Warsaw University of Technology in Poland. In 2011, he was awarded the title of Professor for Life by the President of the Republic of Poland.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
