22 partner organisations from 6 different countries met in Barcelona to start into the second year of Horizon Europe project SIRCULAR
Partners of the Horizon Europe project SIRCULAR met in Barcelona in May 2025 for their second General Assembly. Hosted by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the two-day meeting featured interactive workshops and collaborative sessions that helped refine a shared vision for sustainable, circular practices in the building sector.
Advancing the decarbonisation of the built environment
The SIRCULAR partners discussed the progress in their two demo sites in Spain and in Estonia. In Spain, it is planned to test and install an innovative low-carbon precast insulated façade-renovation concrete panel. In Estonia, prefabricated concrete large panels will be tested and installed.
Both technologies offer high replication potential across the national building stock. They are expected to improve resident comfort and quality of life, generate energy and economic savings, and reduce environmental impact.
From waste to worth: site visit to La Terrassa
Participants visited UPC’s laboratories and toured the H-Zero recycling plant in La Terrassa, where construction and demolition waste is processed. The visit highlighted the technical research underpinning SIRCULAR’s materials reuse and waste-reduction goals.
Kicking off Year 2 of the project
As the project enters its second year, Margherita Fabbri, project coordinator from RINA-C, shared: “Starting our second year, I’m encouraged by the progress we’ve made and the strong collaboration across our consortium. SIRCULAR is building a solid foundation for more circular practices in the building sector, and I look forward to the next steps as we move from planning to practical implementation."
In its second year, SIRCULAR’s consortium will focus on testing and demonstrating key technologies in its demo sites, advancing the development of circular construction tools and methods, expanding stakeholder outreach and engagement activities, and preparing for the launch of the SIRCULAR digital platform.
About the SIRCULAR project
SIRCULAR is a Horizon European project supported by the European Commission under grant agreement No 101147412. It is coordinated by RINA-C and combines the expertise of 22 partners from six European countries, including universities, SMEs, NGOs, and industries. During three-and-a-half years, SIRCULAR aims to transform the building sector into a circular and sustainable industry, aligned with the Built4People partnership principles. SIRCULAR tests and demonstrates innovative technologies and services across four regional clusters: initially in Estonia and Spain, followed by Germany and Greece. These clusters engage construction companies, housing companies, universities, and local administrative entities, focusing on buildings owned or occupied by vulnerable population groups, in line with the SIRCULAR just and affordable transition approach.
As a partner in the SIRCULAR project, Steinbeis Europa Zentrum is responsible for leading communication, dissemination, and exploitation activities. This includes developing strategies and tools to increase the project's visibility, communicate its objectives and outcomes, and support the uptake and sustainable use of its results. Steinbeis Europa Zentrum also supports knowledge transfer and the management of intellectual property rights.
