Interdisciplinary program "Languages, Cultures, Communication" will start in the 2025/2026 winter semester at the Germersheim campus of Mainz University
Multilingual competence is crucial in today's globalized world – in international organizations and development aid projects, in corporate communication and education. The interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree program "Languages, Cultures, Communication," set up by the Faculty of Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies (FTSK) of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), provides such a qualification for professional multilingual work in transcultural contexts. In addition to studying at least two and up to five languages, participants will focus on taking a multiperspective approach to practice-related cross-sectional topics, such as migration, digitalization, climate change, and development aid. In interdisciplinary classes, the students will learn how to analyze current situations using, among other things, historical, sociological, cultural, and literary approaches. A strong emphasis will be on varying ways of how to deal with linguistic and cultural diversity at regional, national, transnational, and international levels.
In the B.A. program "Languages, Cultures, Communication," students will study several languages. All students are required to have prior knowledge of German at least at B2 level, and studying German (as a foreign language), English, or French requires prior knowledge of those languages. No prior knowledge is necessary in any of the other languages. The aim is to furnish graduates of the program with a high level of communication skills in oral, written, and digital forms. Students can pick and choose among a total of 12 languages of study, including Arabic, German (as a foreign language), English, French, Italian, Modern Greek, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. Moreover, non-degree courses in other languages will be on offer, ranging from Finnish or Japanese to Uzbek.
The program is also a great opportunity because of the many options available, including study periods abroad at one of the more than 100 partner universities of Mainz University, internships, and introductory courses in interpreting, translation, and memory studies. The course also includes units on career orientation. Possible career choices for graduates, depending on their personal profile developed during the program and personal interests, range from working in large international organizations, NGOs and foundations, regional authorities, and city partnerships to international corporate communications and transcultural market research.
The Bachelor's degree program "Languages, Cultures, Communication" is set to start at the JGU Faculty of Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies in Germersheim in the 2025/2026 winter semester. The application period will run until 1 September 2025.
