The European Olympic Committees (EOC) EU Office, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) proudly announce the launch of the OCEAN Sport CO2 Calculator – the first free of charge carbon calculator developed specifically for sport organisations that is available globally.
Developed by the Oeko-Institut as part of the EU-funded OCEAN Project coordinated by Eva Rebmann, Deputy Director of the EOC EU Office, and thanks to the support of the IOC and ANOC, the calculator offers a science-based, user-friendly tool for the sport sector by the sport sector following the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. With its automated emissions calculations using country-specific emission factors, the tool allows sport organisations worldwide to understand and manage their carbon footprint, but also to set reduction targets thanks to an exclusive reduction illustration feature.
“The OCEAN Tool is practical, multilingual (English, Spanish, French), and tailored to the real day-to-day activities of National Olympic Committees and sport organisations, thanks to the input of 18 European NOCs and several International Federations” said Folker Hellmund, Director of the EOC EU Office.
A simple and free tool for sport organisations to reduce their impact
The OCEAN Sport CO2 Calculator is a practical solution for sport organisations looking for a way to undertake climate action, starting with understanding their impact, in line with the Olympic Movement’s efforts to reduce its impact and the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework’s reporting expectations.
“Only with the knowledge about their individual emission hot spots can organisations invest in the most impactful measures,” said Tobias Wagner, Senior Researcher at the Oeko-Institut. “This tool enables sport organisations to move from intention to action with reliable, easy-to-understand data.”
“We are pleased to have collaborated closely with the EOC EU Office, ANOC, and NOCs to develop a tool that enables National Olympic Committees around the world to efficiently and easily measure their carbon footprint. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to support the Olympic Movement in addressing the climate crisis, and ultimately, to make the sport world more sustainable” stated Julie Duffus, Head of Sustainability of the IOC.
“It was important for us to make sure this tool wasn’t just for Europe, but available to sport organisations everywhere. Now, everyone in sport can benefit from a free, easy-to-use tool to support proper measurement of their carbon footprint” added Andres Santi, Senior Manager at ANOC.
