The University of Stuttgart has launched a new project called “StuttWay4Ukraine.” Through joint courses and in-depth academic cooperation, the university is strengthening the internationalization of its study programs and supporting the Ukrainian higher education system.
"With StuttWay4Ukraine, we are sending a strong signal of solidarity among universities in Europe, in line with our internationalization strategy of 'Responsible international engagement and networking.' The anniversary year of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) shows just how crucial trusting international partnerships are for peace, reconstruction, and shaping the future," says Prof. Alexander Brem, Vice Rector for Science Transfer and International Affairs.
Following on from the Ukraine Digital project , which ran from 2022 to 2025, StuttWay4Ukraine is now heralding the next phase of cooperation with the aim of sustainably deepening academic collaboration and specifically strengthening the Ukrainian higher education system in the context of reconstruction. The DAAD is funding StuttWay4Ukraine as part of the "German-Ukrainian University Network" (DUHN) program with around €740,000 for the next four years.
International cooperation
Together with Donetsk National Technical University (DonNTU) and Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University (CNUVS), the University of Stuttgart is laying the foundation for joint master's programs. Teams are developing four digital teaching modules that will contribute to rebuilding the country and dealing with war damage. These modules are to be integrated not only into various master's programs at Ukrainian partner universities, but also into the elective courses offered at the University of Stuttgart.
The first pilot courses in the educational science module, offered by Prof. Richard Powers, began in early September. The English-language blended learning courses are conducted virtually, enabling participants to strengthen their intercultural skills and establish professional research and learning contacts. The courses “Instructional Design & Teaching Online,” “Universal Design for Learning & Accessible Course Content,” and “Project-Based Learning with eTwinning & Erasmus+ for Interculturality” serve as a model for future collaborations between the University of Stuttgart and DonNTU, which will also be expanded in the coming years through mobility programs such as the Summer School 2026.
The content and methodology of StuttWay4Ukraine are being implemented as a close cooperation between the International Office and several institutions at the University of Stuttgart, including the Institute of Education (IfE), the High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS), the Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Waste Management (ISWA), the Institute of Linguistics (IL), and the Language Center with its German as a Foreign Language program.
Structurally anchored work
The project also includes the following measures:
• Setting up a project website to coordinate and provide central teaching and project materials
• Establishing a joint alumni network for long-term networking among graduates of the participating disciplines
• Implementing digital training opportunities to improve teacher qualifications.
With StuttWay4Ukraine, the University of Stuttgart is not only making an active contribution to the internationalization of its study programs; it is also promoting the harmonization of higher education between Germany and Ukraine. The integration of developed modules into various degree programs, fostering intensive exchanges, and maintaining close institutional cooperation provide the foundation for long-term, structured partnerships.
