Hannover Medical School impresses in Newsweek's Smart Hospital ranking, achieving top positions in nine specialist areas.

Modern treatment centres that rely on advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotic surgery, telemedicine and automation to improve patient care will continue to gain in importance in the coming years. The American weekly magazine Newsweek lists the 350 smartest hospitals worldwide in its ‘World's Best Smart Hospitals 2026’ ranking. Hannover Medical School (MHH) now appears in 115th place for the first time – as the ninth-best smart hospital in Germany and the only one in Lower Saxony in the ranking.
‘The MHH wants to respond resiliently to global challenges and is positioning itself as a central driving force for future-oriented health research and healthcare,’ says MHH President Professor Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner. ‘This fantastic ranking is a great success for the entire MHH and shows that our focus on innovation in healthcare is paying off. At the same time, however, the award is also an incentive for us to continuously improve.’

Top rankings in nine specialist disciplines

At the beginning of the year, MHH was ranked among the top 100 hospitals worldwide and fifth among German hospitals in the renowned Newsweek ranking. MHH clinics have now made it into the rankings of the world's best specialist clinics in nine of the twelve disciplines examined. The ‘World's Best Specialised Hospitals 2026’ ranking lists the 300 best hospitals for cardiology and oncology, the 150 best for cardiac surgery, gastroenterology, endocrinology, neurology, orthopaedics and pneumology, and the 125 best for neurosurgery.

In the field of cardiology, the MHH Clinic for Cardiology and Angiology ranks 59th worldwide, while in oncology, the MHH Clinic for Haematology, Haemostaseology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation ranks 81st among the world's 300 best specialist departments. The pulmonology department of the Clinic for Pulmonology and Infectiology ranks 41st among the world's 150 best specialist departments; the Clinic for Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplant and Vascular Surgery ranks 44th, and the neurology department of the Clinic for Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology ranks 63rd. In the field of endocrinology and gastroenterology, the MHH Clinic for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology has been included in the list of the world's 150 best specialist departments, as has the Clinic for Orthopaedics. Finally, in the specialist field of neurosurgery, the Clinic for Neurosurgery ranks an outstanding 30th among 125 clinics worldwide.

Ranking based on global online survey

The ranking by Newsweek in collaboration with the data portal Statista is based on a global online survey conducted from May to July 2025 using recommendations from medical professionals, accreditation data and certifications, as well as the evaluation of patient-related outcome reports.
