Prof. Dr. Thomas Thum is one of the most cited scientists worldwide.
For the fifth time in a row, Professor Dr. Thomas Thum, Director of the Institute for Molecular and Translational Therapy Strategies at Hannover Medical School (MHH), is one of the most frequently cited researchers internationally. This is shown by the latest analysis of scientific publications by Clarivate Analytics. The annually updated list of Highly Cited Researchers records the specialist publications that are among the top one per cent of the most frequently cited works worldwide. "This award confirms that our research is receiving international attention and providing concrete impetus for new therapies. Our goal remains unchanged: to translate scientific findings quickly and responsibly into innovative treatment options for cardiovascular diseases," explains Professor Thum. His team focuses on heart disease, particularly heart failure and cardiac remodelling. They are developing RNA-based and other drug-based approaches to combat cardiovascular disease.
Scientists publish their findings in specialist journals, which other researchers around the world can use for their own work – provided they cite them in their own publications. Both the number of citations and the reputation of the journal in which the work was published serve as indicators of scientific influence.
Ranking shows the ‘Who's Who’ in science
Professor Thum is listed in the ‘Cross Fields’ category, in which researchers have an influence on science beyond their actual field of expertise. The current list includes a total of 7,131 researchers from 23 disciplines in the natural, life and social sciences. The ‘Who's Who’ of science also provides information about the countries and research institutions where the scientific elite work. 173 of these experts in the ‘Cross-Field’ category work in Germany.
