The roof terrace of the Fraunhofer Institute for Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP on the newly constructed Building E has been honored at the 2025 Saxon Garden and Landscape Architecture Awards. The executing company, Heidel Garten- und Landschaftsbau, received the first prize in the category “Specialized Landscape Gardening.”
Located in Dresden’s Gruna district on the grounds of the Fraunhofer Institute Center Dresden, the terrace features intensive greenery on two levels at a height of seven meters. It includes trees, perennials, grasses, and a summer meadow that serves as a habitat for insects. A fully automated irrigation system ensures sustainable care of the vegetation.
The implementation required a high degree of logistical planning: the roof surface could only be fitted using a crane, and the work had to be coordinated in such a way that the institute's sensitive research operations were not impaired. In addition, varying roof loads ranging from 4.5 to 22.0 kN/m² had to be considered. Thanks to the expertise of Heidel Garten- und Landschaftsbau and the planning by Petzold.Steger Landschaftsarchitekten, the project was successfully completed.
“This project was an exciting challenge. The logistical and structural requirements were complex, but it is precisely these kinds of tasks that drive us forward. Winning the first prize for our work fills us with great joy,” summarizes Stefanie Heise, owner of Heidel Garten- und Landschaftsbau.
“The roof terrace is a place that enriches our everyday working lives. We are proud that the outstanding work has received this recognition in the ‘Specialized Landscaping’ category,” emphasizes Max von Jutrzenka-Trzebiatowski, Head of Technical Management at Fraunhofer FEP.
