Research and education in the field of Advanced Material Systems for Energy Engineering, Sensors and Actuators

Prof. Dr. Sohini Kar-Narayan, Director and Head of the Department of Materials Systems Engineering at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg, has been appointed Honorary Professor for the field of ‘Advanced Material Systems for Energy Technology, Sensors and Actuators’ at the Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg.

New and functionalised materials form the basis for the design of sustainable and innovative components, devices and machines. They are used, for example, in intelligent sensors for medical examinations, in control loops for the automatic control and monitoring of processes, and in novel forms of energy generation and storage.

The Materials Systems Engineering Research Department at the Max Planck Institute in Magdeburg, headed by Prof. Sohini Kar-Narayan, focuses on the systems engineering of functionalised materials. The group is investigating the key question of how the structure and properties of novel material systems are related. In addition, the aim is to be able to design these materials in a targeted manner in order to realise specific functionalities in applications in energy technology, sensor technology, actuator technology and biomedicine.

With her appointment as Honorary Professor, Sohini Kar-Narayan is now also able to share her research area and expert knowledge as part of her lecturing at Magdeburg University and to guide and supervise young scientists towards their doctorates.

Sohini Kar-Narayan expressed her gratitude: “I feel very honoured and I am deeply grateful for the warm welcome. I look forward to working with the faculty in the future.” In research, her expertise combines perfectly with faculty capacities in designing material production processes and exploring structure-property relationships, but also in molecular design and chemistry.

The appointment as Honorary Professor took place on 17 December 2025 at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. The certificate was handed over to Sohini Kar-Narayan by Prof. Jens Strackeljan, President, and Prof. Evangelos Tsotsas, Dean of the Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering.

Sohini Kar-Narayan has been Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems and a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society since 1 October 2025. Previous to this, she was a Professor of Device Materials in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
