Prof. Dr.-Ing. Clemens Rohde has been made Division Director at the Wuppertal Institute and appointed to a professorship at the University of Wuppertal

On 1 February, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Clemens Rohde became Director of the Future Energy and Industry Systems Research Division at the Wuppertal Institute. Rohde has also been appointed, through the Jülich model, to a professorship at the University of Wuppertal (BUW). This will enable both institutions to consolidate their strategic partnership and reinforce the close links between practice-oriented research, university teaching and practical policy advice in relation to the transformation of energy and industry systems.

Wuppertal, 3 February 2026: The Wuppertal Institute has defined the future direction of its research into energy and industry systems by naming Prof. Dr.-Ing. Clemens Rohde as the new Director of its Future Energy and Industry Systems Research Division. In addition, Rohde has been appointed to a Professorship for Economic Transformation Processes of Energy and Industry Systems at the University of Wuppertal (BUW). The professorship has been established in the Schumpeter School of Business and Economics at BUW. These appointments will enable the Wuppertal Institute and BUW to consolidate their close cooperation.

“In Clemens Rohde, we have secured the services of an excellent scientist and a proven expert to lead our Future Energy and Industry Systems Research Division. His dual role as a Division Director at the Wuppertal Institute and a Professor at the University of Wuppertal is a strong signal of the strategic partnership between the two institutions,” emphasises Prof. Dr.-Ing. Manfred Fischedick, President and Scientific Managing Director of the Wuppertal Institute.

The Future Energy and Industry Systems Research Division develops sustainable solutions for an integrated transformation of energy and industry systems. Its research, conducted with stakeholders from the worlds of politics, business and civil society, focuses on developing future-oriented (resilient) concepts for the transformation of energy-intensive industries, especially for sectors and regions severely impacted by structural change.

“The appointment of Prof. Rohde represents a further piece of the puzzle as we continue to refine our profile, especially for our Technology Towards Zero-Waste and Zero-Carbon field of activity. We’re delighted to have strong partners like the Wuppertal Institute by our side, working with us to produce solutions to major challenges,” explains Prof. Dr. Birgitta Wolff, Rector of the University of Wuppertal.

    About Clemens Rohde

From January 2024 to January 2026, Clemens Rohde was Head of the Department of Energy Technology and Energy Systems at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI. He first joined the Fraunhofer Institute in 2010 as a Project Manager and serving as Coordinator of the Energy Efficiency Business Unit from 2012 to 2024. He studied Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt, graduating with the professional title of “Diplom-Ingenieur” in 2002. Prior to 2007, he was a Research Assistant at TU Darmstadt in the field of waste management, working on national and international research projects focusing on waste management and environmental assessment. In 2007, he obtained his doctorate and the title of “Doktor-Ingenieur”. This was followed by three years as Faculty Manager at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy at TU Darmstadt.

“I’m looking forward to the new challenge in Wuppertal and the opportunity to work with a wonderful team to actively support and shape the transformation of energy and industry systems in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, Europe and around the world,” says Clemens Rohde.
