AI-Driven Materials Research in Saxony: Leibniz Institutes IFW and IPF Launch ERDF-Funded Project “Leibniz-AI4MAT”

Emily Schöner Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e. V.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is opening up new opportunities for materials research by enabling data-driven models to systematically analyze large datasets, accelerating the development of materials with novel properties.

With the launch of the project “Artificial Intelligence for In Silico Materials Research (Leibniz-AI4MAT)”, the Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) and the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden (IPF) are joining forces to advance AI-supported materials development in Saxony.

Central to the project is the establishment and long-term operation of a high-performance computing cluster as a research infrastructure for AI and machine-learning methods in materials science. Accessible across both institutes, the cluster will support the prediction of material properties, the design of new materials, and the optimization of synthesis and manufacturing processes. Compared to conventional trial-and-error approaches, this data-driven strategy is expected to reduce time and resource requirements in research and development. In addition, a waste-heat recovery system will reuse the heat generated during operation, enhancing overall energy efficiency.

Leibniz-AI4MAT is funded under the guideline “Research InfraProNet 2021–2027” and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Just Transition Fund—an initiative of the Free State of Saxony to support application-oriented projects and research infrastructures at universities and non-university research institutions.

    Help

Search / advanced search of the idw archives
    Combination of search terms

You can combine search terms with and, or and/or not, e.g. Philo not logy.

    Brackets

You can use brackets to separate combinations from each other, e.g. (Philo not logy) or (Psycho and logy).

    Phrases

Coherent groups of words will be located as complete phrases if you put them into quotation marks, e.g. “Federal Republic of Germany”.

    Selection criteria

You can also use the advanced search without entering search terms. It will then follow the criteria you have selected (e.g. country or subject area).

If you have not selected any criteria in a given category, the entire category will be searched (e.g. all subject areas or all countries).
