The Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA) has comprehensively revised its certification “Excellence in Digital Education”®, setting a new benchmark for quality assurance in digital teaching and learning at higher education and continuing education institutions worldwide.
The revision responds to the rapid transformation of education driven by digitalisation, evolving organisational structures, and new technological opportunities. The updated certification framework aims to reflect current developments while further enhancing transparency and comparability of assessment results.
A central innovation of the revised certification is the introduction of extensive guiding questions for each assessment criterion. These questions encourage institutions to critically reflect on key aspects of digital education and support strategic development. Among the addressed topics are the integration of artificial intelligence into teaching and learning processes, the management of increasing technological requirements, and the consideration of ethical and social dimensions of digital learning.
The certification continues to evaluate the quality assurance of digital teaching and learning environments based on five established standards: Strategy, Personnel, Technology, Didactics, and Quality Assurance. Within these standards, a comprehensive catalogue comprising 21 criteria provides a structured and holistic evaluation framework. A completely new criterion in this context is one that addresses the institution's concept for promoting digital skills.
Another major enhancement is the introduction of a three-level assessment structure: “visible,” “structured,” and “sustainable.” Accordingly, the FIBAA quality seal ‘Excellence in Digital Education’® will be awarded in bronze, silver and gold categories. These levels enable institutions to demonstrate and systematically develop the maturity of their digital teaching and learning processes. The newly implemented maturity model, supported by a transparent points-based evaluation system, allows for a differentiated representation of institutional development stages – ranging from basic quality structures to advanced best-practice solutions.
By offering clear orientation and measurable development pathways, the revised “Excellence in Digital Education”® certification supports institutions in strengthening the quality, credibility, and future readiness of their digital education offerings.
