Number 1 in Germany, number 1 in Europe and now also at the top worldwide. This outstanding result was achieved by the Virtual Reality research field at the University of Würzburg in the latest CSRanking.
The Chair of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) at Julius-Maximilians-Universität (JMU) Würzburg has been carrying out research and development work in the field of highly immersive and interactive virtual, augmented and mixed reality systems for over ten years.
The work of Professor Marc Erich Latoschik and his team has since been recognised by the Computer Science Ranking (CSRanking). In the latest edition, the Würzburg researchers have now even achieved first place worldwide in the "Virtual Reality" category. They share this place with the University of Florida in the USA.
The achievements from the past ten years were assessed. The trend in Würzburg is pointing steadily upwards.
"This fantastic result is particularly impressive because we achieved it with significantly fewer researchers than other institutions," says Latoschik. In addition to the chair holder, these are Dr Jean-Luc Lugrin (HCI) and Professor Carolin Wienrich. She heads the Professorship of Psychology of Intelligent Interactive Systems.
Strong in the field of language processing
JMU is also strongly represented in other specialist areas. In "Natural Language Processing", the university has defended an excellent fifth place in Germany, which means 25th place in Europe (27th last year) and 97th place worldwide (previously 104th). This is confirmation of the good work being done at the Department of Computer Science XII under the direction of Professor Goran Glavaš.
Top rankings in Computer Vision
JMU also continues to rank well in the field of computer vision. It is ranked 7th in Germany, 27th in Europe and 127th worldwide thanks to Professor Radu Timofte and his team at the Department of Computer Science IV. This specialised field of artificial intelligence deals with the question of how computers can extract meaningful information from digital image material.
CAIDAS continues to grow
In addition to the Institute of Computer Science, the researchers mentioned are also members of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science CAIDAS . The research centre also occupies a top position in the ranking. Since its foundation in 2022, it has been ranked 7th in Germany in the field of artificial intelligence (previous year: 8th), which means 31st place in Europe.
"The continuous improvement in this metrics-based ranking is a very positive signal for the scientific excellence of CAIDAS. Precisely because the CSR ranking can be regarded as particularly objective in its methodology," says Professor Ingo Scholtes, deputy spokesperson of the research centre.
