Reutlingen University develops digital tool for sustainable business models
Following the successful completion of the European research project DECIDE – Digital Services for Circular Economy, companies, business development agencies and regional development organisations will in future have a new digital tool at their disposal: the DECIDE Toolbox. Reutlingen University developed key components of the Toolbox, thereby making a significant contribution to translating scientific findings into a practical application that can be put to immediate use. The project was funded by the European Union as part of the Interreg Danube Region Programme.
Circular economy business models are regarded as key to a resource-efficient and competitive business location. However, many companies face the challenge of systematically developing circular ideas, evaluating them from an economic perspective and implementing them successfully. This is precisely where the DECIDE Toolbox comes in: it brings together methods, digital tools and learning materials on an integrated platform and supports users in identifying circular potential, developing business models, analysing value chains, simulating impacts, and planning implementation and monitoring.
In this project, Reutlingen University focused in particular on modelling circular business models and on developing and integrating the toolbox, which brings together research findings from various pilot projects and makes them accessible to businesses and other stakeholders. The aim was to adapt scientific methods so that they could also be put to practical use outside the research context.
The toolbox is aimed in particular at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), start-ups, business development agencies, cluster organisations and public institutions. Thanks to its modular structure, individual tools can be used as required or combined to form a comprehensive development process – from the initial business idea through to the assessment of environmental, economic and social impacts. At the same time, the platform promotes the transfer of scientific findings into practice and supports companies in implementing sustainable innovations more quickly.
“The DECIDE Toolbox is a practical tool that helps businesses systematically manage the transition to a circular economy. At the same time, the project demonstrates how research findings can be successfully translated into concrete applications,” explains Prof. Dr Dieter Hertweck from the Herman Hollerith Centre at Reutlingen University.
The toolbox was developed in collaboration with 16 project partners from ten countries in the Danube region and will remain publicly available once the project has concluded. This ensures that the methods and tools developed during the project will remain available in the long term and can be used to develop sustainable business models even after the project has ended.
